A
Family and Community Town Supper (FACTS) is an energetic, interactive event that
brings people of all ages, races, and socioeconomic classes together to discuss important issues over a meal. The
timely issue for our FACTS is supporting, promoting and thinking creatively about
eco-tourism in Lane County. Lane County is already
seen as “the sustainability county” by environmental groups around the country,
with good reason. However, in order to attract 1) these organizations to hold
conferences, retreats and meetings in Lane County, and 2) environmentally conscious
tourists who choose to travel green and see the sustainable sights, there are
some gaps in the infrastructure to fill. These gaps in services and products
could provide many living wage jobs in Lane County, while making Lane a veritable
sustainability showcase, and an even greater place to live and work. There is
no upper limit in sight for the kinds of clean, earth-friendly businesses and
attractions that could be created and supported by tourists and locals alike.
The more eco-tourists come to Lane, the more they see and learn of sustainability
to take back to their communities, the more sustainable jobs and businesses are
created here (and potentially there), and the more sustainable Lane County becomes.
It is an exciting positive cycle whose time has come.
FACTS is an award-winning model that was created to: build and strengthen community
bonds; bridge gaps among people of different ages, races, belief systems, and
classes; promote family involvement and communication; provide opportunities for
youth to participate as equals; encourage citizenship and community involvement;
and build support for community initiatives.
